purpose of visuals lighting

July 17, 2008 by Team 14

The whole idea of having lightings started when I saw one of this save the water campaign. I was totally inspired by the ripple effects on the ads, though it was photoshop. I thought if we could bring the same idea making virtual effects mounted on the walls of the exhibition. It could evokes much more feelings, thus our aim is to make our audiences have a feel being in an underwater world.

Thus, we proceed to work on the idea of having visuals. We tried to experiment with different lightings like red heads, deolights, kino-flo and etc.. After which, we thought of return back to our original idea in using the lights from the E3 exhibition hall. We proceed to plan the blueprint and then, another obstacle faced when OES told us that our request could not be met. We can only then consider other ways to do the lightings.

After that, ideas kept popping in, until we had finally thought of giving a shot by using the projectors. This suggested ideas do give us alot of problems to consider like will the visuals be blocked by people and we had a shortage of laptops and limited amount of projectors that we can borrow out. During the first and second day, we were trying out the visuals and also trying to think very hard on how we can project the image to our desired angle so as to achieve the overlapping effects showing faint lines on it. We explored further and finally we decided to use card boards, which seems like television monitors to help cover the “square” image that is projected out. we use 2 square cardboards for each sections, there are a total of 6 sections and 12 cardboards with 6 projectors. On the family and distress call section we use green and blue colour gels to portray the sea. At the commotion section we use red and blue colour gel to portray the blue sea being dyed red from the killing of the dolphins.

The movement of the lights were also fully utilized. We rendered the mac screensaver into videos so that we can play the ripple effects even on windows laptop due to shortage of macs. The ripple effects makes the visuals more prominent and pretty.Another reason why we want to create moving lights so that it will move along with the sounds. It is also evoking a vibe that you are swimming underwater. Basically, the purpose of the lightings to keep our audience feel more connected to the sound as we do not want to throw them a bunch of sounds and not giving them any direction to what is this about. Especially young students, they are much more simple minded, therefore these visuals will be like a compass to direct them through the sequence of how the sound travels.

In order to touch the hearts of the people, the visuals also make them stand in together to feel how the dolphins are suffering through a process of capturing, torture and killing! poor dolphins~

lighting blueprint

The lighting blueprint below is actually not executed as OES is not able to execute our request.

However our alternatives is using 6 projectors on different locations with colour gels.

Below is the updated blue print.
